Le MuséonAt the editor’s request, I wrote in Le Muséon a critical review of Jean-Claude Haelewyck’s Comparative Grammar of the Semitic Languages (Safran, 2006).

The unusual length of this recension (16 pages!) is due to the numerous problems encountered at the reading of this volume. J.-C. Haelewyck is aware of these problems and answered me with these nice words: “I wish all authors to receive such critique. You go into details while always remaining nice and constructive.”

affiche-ala-2009I will teach a course of Initiation to Biblical Aramaic at the Academy of Ancient Languages on July 14-24, 2009. Classes will takes place Monday through Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM at Digne-les-Bains (Alpes de Haute Provence), thus allowing students to enjoy a sunny summer while learning a new language!  ;-)

Here is version 1.2 (Mac) of my “CuneiType Unicode” converter. This program automatically converts text written with the CuneiType1, CuneiTrueType, Mari, and Babel legacy fonts (notably used by assyriologists for transcription of cuneiform texts).

L'araméen des manuscrits de la mer MorteUrsula Schattner-Rieser, who teaches Aramaic at the School of Ancient Near Eastern Languages and CivilizationsCatholic University of Paris, has published a grammar of the Dead Sea Scrolls Aramaic. I’ve had the pleasure to proofread it and compile a thematic index (see p. 8).
